Lytic bone lesion is a general term used when the bone becomes extremely weak by a disease. Normal bone tissue constantly gets remodeling and repaired from time to time. Lytic lesion of bone is an area where the bone appears to have been eaten away. There are several diseases that can cause destruction of bone area.
Bone metastases, or osseous metastatic disease, is a category of cancer metastases that results from primary tumor invasion to bone. Bone-originating primary tumors such as osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma are rare. Unlike hematological malignancies that originate in the blood and form non-solid tumors, bone metastases generally arise from epithelial tumors and form a solid mass inside the bone. Bone metastases cause severe pain, characterized by a dull, constant
Lung. The treatment of lung metastases depends on the extent of the metastases … Bone metastases from lung cancer are usually lytic. In one third of the cases, however, and in most patients with carcinoid tumours, the metastases are sclerotic (2). Some patients with bone metastases from lung cancer develop excentrically lytic lesions with one-sided destruction of cortical bone (22).
In general, bone scans most reliably depict osteoblastic metastases and can miss purely lytic disease. Harry Sieplinga/Photographer's Choice/Getty Images WebMD describes lytic lesions as weak areas of the bone. Also called osteolytic lesions, these lesions occur when multiple myeloma afflicts the body. Registered nurse Karen Raymaakers also notes that myeloma cells release chemicals that lead to bone breakdown. Metastases from lung, renal, and thyroid tumors tend to be entirely lytic.
Lytic lesions are light areas found in otherwise dense bone on an x-ray, which suggest that something has destroyed or replaced that part of bone. There are both cancerous and noncancerous causes of lytic lesions, however given the potential for cancer this finding should be taken very seriously until cancer can be ruled out.
Although prostate cancer is generally blastic and multiple myeloma usually lytic, most other tumors have a mixed appearance. One of the complications of multiple myeloma is the development of lytic bone lesions. Learn about the causes, symptoms and management of bone lesions associated with multiple myeloma at WebMD.

Computed tomography histogram analysis can be considered as a method to be used in the differentiation of multiple myeloma and lytic bone metastases. Oftentimes, small holes result from osteolysis. These holes in the bone are referred to as osteolytic lesions or lytic lesions.
Breast metastases also display osteolytic activity via changes in OPG-RANKL ratio This means that control of bony metastatic disease is vital to maintaining
Breast cancer often behaves in a mixed osteolytic and osteoblastic manner.
